Symbiosis review
Liquidity bridge with its own host chain — an MPC relayer network carries messages, synthetic sTokens are minted and swapped in Octopools
Key findings
Symbiosis Finance is a liquidity bridge: your tokens are swapped to a transit token (USDC, WETH or WBTC), locked on the source chain, minted as synthetic sTokens on Symbiosis's own host chain, swapped through Octopools and released on the destination chain. Each hop is signed by the Symbiosis Relayer Network with an MPC key, and the gas for every hop is deducted from your amount. In September 2026 its Bitcoin bridge minted unbacked syBTC; the realised loss was ≈ $336K.
As of 3 Nov 2026, 11:35 UTC (run #540), Symbiosis returned quotes on 29 sampled routes (111 quote rows in this packet). At $200 it was the cheapest ranked quote on 0 routes. Median cost among its non-negative $200 quotes: 43.46 bps (cheapest observed 26.45 bps). Sources reporting it: LI.FI, Symbiosis. Real-money tests: none yet — planned after launch.
- 7-day coverage: rankable quotes on 29 routes in 336 of 336 runs (37,344 rows).
- Gas policy: Gas is shown per quote when the API returns it; ranking uses net received excl. gas.

How does Symbiosis work?
You sign one transaction on the source chain. If needed, your token is swapped to a transit token via DEX aggregators and locked. The Symbiosis Relayer Network picks up the oracle request, checks the gas estimate, signs the next transaction with its MPC key and submits it to the Symbiosis host chain, where sTokens are minted and swapped in Octopools. Another relayer-signed message releases the asset on the destination chain, and a final DEX swap delivers your token (Symbiosis docs).
On some chains a newer Depository + Solver flow locks the released transit token and lets a solver complete the final swap only if your minimum output is met. If slippage is exceeded on the destination, you receive the transit token instead.

What are the risks of using Symbiosis?

Message verification
Every hop depends on the relayer network's MPC signature. In September 2026 a flaw in how the Bitcoin bridge decoded deposits, combined with an unchecked negative fee, let an attacker mint about 2^62 raw units of unbacked syBTC.
SymbiosisOAK (onchainattack.org)SymbiosisUpgrade authority
On Ethereum, Portal (which locks your tokens) and BridgeV2 (which executes relayer messages) are upgradeable proxies; their ProxyAdmin and the contracts themselves are owned by a 3-of-5 Safe multisig, with no timelock in between. On the Symbiosis host chain, BridgeV2 and Synthesis are likewise upgradeable by a 3-of-5 Safe. Who controls the host chain itself is not yet checked. Symbiosis is not covered on L2Beat's interop pages.
Symbiosis (GitHub)BlockscoutBlockscoutBlockscoutOutput risk
If destination-chain slippage is exceeded you receive the transit token (e.g. USDC) instead of the token you asked for.

What fees does Symbiosis charge?
- Gas withholding
- You pay source-chain gas; gas for the host-chain and destination hops is estimated in stablecoin terms at signing and deducted from the transferred amount. Symbiosis
- Pool and DEX costs
- Octopool swap pricing and third-party DEX swaps on each side add to the cost. Symbiosis
Our Symbiosis quotes come from its public API (POST /crosschain/v1/swap) and already include the withheld gas.
How did its quotes perform in our data?
Quotes for Symbiosis in run #540, by the API that reported them.
| Source | Type | Routes | Quote rows | $200 cheapest | Median $200 bps | Negative-cost rows |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Symbiosis | direct | 29 | 87 | 0 | 38.85 | 0 |
| LI.FI | via aggregator | 8 | 24 | 0 | 90.69 | 0 |
Negative-cost quotes (receiving more than you send) are listed, never ranked. Cost excludes source-chain gas.
Has upswap tested it with real money?
Not yet. Real-money tests are planned after launch; no test wallets or transactions are published yet.
What are the pros and cons?
Pros
- Wide chain coverage, including Tron and Bitcoin routes.
- One signature for a multi-hop swap.
- Fees and gas withholding are documented step by step.
Cons
- Every transfer depends on one relayer network's MPC key.
- September 2026 unbacked-mint incident.
- Core contracts upgradeable by a 3-of-5 multisig with no timelock.
Who is Symbiosis for?
Worth checking for routes others don't serve (Tron, some non-EVM chains); keep amounts small to moderate given the trust model.
